Turkey Bone Broth
Bone broth is a collagen rich broth that is made from cooking the bones slowly and for a long time. It’s easy and delicious. It’s also a great way to use the entire turkey after holiday meals.
The Benefits of Bone Broth
Bone broth is rich in minerals, collagen and amino acids. Vinegar helps to draw the collagen out of the bones and into the soup.
Bone broth has numerous benefits including; supporting joint health, restoring the gut and digestive system. Bone broth is rich in the amino acid glycine. Glycine is needed in order to make glutathione which is a powerful antioxidant that helps with liver detoxification.
A beauty bonus benefit: Thanks to the abundance of collagen in bone broth it is good for youthful, glowing skin, as well as healthy and strong hair and nails.
Ingredients
2 lbs turkey bones
2 large carrots, roughly chopped
2 celery stick, roughly chopped
1 yellow onion, roughly chopped
3 - 4 cloves garlic, smashed
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 bay leave
1 tsp black peppercorns
2 tsp salt
Place the bones in the Instant Pot.
Roughly chop the vegetables and garlic and place in the pot on top of the bones.
Mix in the apple cider vinegar.
Add the bay leaf, sea salt and peppercorns.
Turn the Instant Pot on to manual and set for 2hrs.
Once done, allow the pot to naturally release.
Once it has naturally released, remove the vegetables.
If the bones break easily there is no more collagen left in them. If they are still hard, repeat the cooking process one more time. Once you’re done cooking, strain the broth into 2 large bowls.
When cool enough, place the bowls in to the fridge and wait until the broth has completely cooled down and then store.
Alternatively, if you don’t have an Instant Pot, you can use a slow cooker. To make the broth in the slow cooker cook on low-medium for 12 hours. Tip: cook overnight and it’ll be ready to cool and store when you get up in the morning.
Now it’s time to store the broth. I store my broth 2 ways.
Fill several 500ml jars 3/4 of the way full. Place them in the freezer with the lids off to allow for the liquid to expand. Once the broth is completely frozen put the lids on.
Fill ice cube trays with the broth and freeze. Once frozen, place them in a freezer bag or freezer friendly container. These are great when you like to sip on the broth for a nice pre-meal digestive support or for the gut healing benefits.
